Don't Buy a USB Turntable or USB Cassette Player to convert your LPs and Cassette Tapes to MP3 and CD
Here's what the others won't tell you about converting LPs, cassettes and reel to reels into mp3 files:
USB Turntable and USB cassette players that use cheaply manufactured components can damage your music.
Ceramic cartridge (are they serious?), spherical stylus (what are they thinking!?) and a plastic platter (funny, I know) are all things to watch out for.
Bad enough that you can't make your audio recordings sound great.
Even worse that cheap components can unnecessarily wear out your LP records and cassettes.
Oh, and guess what?
Did you know that you could be using hardware that you already own and trust?
Imagine that! No need to replace your quality analog turntable of cassette deck.
DAK's LP and Tapes to MP3 Conversion System: Easier, Faster and Better Support
If you care about your music as much as I do, chances are that you already own really great equipment to play your music.
Already own a great turntable that you know you can trust?
Perfect! You'll want to use the absolute best to create flawless digital copies of your cherished LP library. Hookup your turntable to our LP to MP3/CD PC Interface Mixer, and you'll be all ready to go. It's that easy.
Of course, if you don't have a turntable, or want to replace the one you already have, our turntable will really get the job done.
This diagram shows you what our LP to MP3 and CD conversion process looks like:
Here's what you need to transfer ANY analog audio into MP3 files:
(we also support WAV, OGG, WMA and FLAC formats. Oh, and we'll teach you how to burn them into CDs, too) ;)
Preamp Interface Mixer
Plug your turntable, tape deck or both into the DAK 2800-PC. Plug the DAK 2800-PC into your computer. Since it's a two channel mixer, you can switch recording from channel A and channel B without disconnecting any of your devices. The hardware setup is that easy. From here on, the software takes over.
Audio Recording Software
To record the audio signal now flowing into your computer, you'll need audio recording software.
Don't worry it's all included free with your order of the interface mixer.
Our recording software is called Audio Workshop, and we developed it specifically for your next project.
You don't need any previous computer experience to get started on your LP to mp3 and CD conversion project. We teach it all to you from step one.
Audio Workshop: Why It's Better Than Free Software
(Even though you get Audio Workshop completely free)
or skip to your buying choices
DAK has been offering our LP to CD and MP3 system for the last fifteen years. We've served over 68,000 users in that time, most of whom had very little computer knowledge.
Free software isn't tailor-made for any specific function, and especially not for a project digitizing your entire music library! It's just a program that has some things you need, is missing other things that you want and is filled with loads of stuff you'll never use. Then it's up to you to figure it all out. There may be discussion boards if you have any questions, but there is no support team for you to consult with a real person if you run into any difficulty.
DAK's Audio Workshop
is developed from the customer's perspective. We've included all the necessary features for you to digitize your records and tapes, while excluding most superfluous ones. The result is a user-centric experience that follows a clear and intuitive workflow to minimize the learning curve and maximize efficiency.
Specifically, Audio Workshop accomplishes this by implementing three different program tabs (just like the ones we use in web browsers), effectively dividing Audio Workshop into three sections. Each section represents a different stage of the conversion process - Recording, File Editing, Track Splitting.
I've detailed some of Audio Workshop's breakthroughs on the right hand side bar. If you want to read the full details about Audio Workshop, you can do that on the page dedicated to reviewing it here (it opens in a new tab so you don't need to get sidetracked).
Whichever program you use, whether ours our some other free program, the conversion process is the same.
You'll need to record your audio signal flowing into the computer.
You'll want to remove as many pops, clicks and other imperfections as you can.
You'll want to equalize your audio to sound even better.
You'll need to split you audio into individual tracks (Audio Workshop auto-splits your tracks with the click of a button).
You'll want (really want) to tag your tracks with album info, track number, cover art and other identifying information.
These capabilities have been incorporated into Audio Workshop's different program tabs so that you can get your entire project done easily without the cluttered overload of features.
If you're using a Mac, laptop or all in one computer to transfer your LPs, make sure it has a line input. They usually don't, so for you guys we have a component that adds the line input capability to your computer. Add it directly to your cart below.
Or, read about it here (opens in a new tab).

Why I choose
professional grade hardware over the standard USB turntable:
-USB turntables usually come with a plastic platter, not an aluminum one.
-The USB turntable's cartridge is usually made out of ceramic so it isn't magnetic. The stylus (also called needle) is often spherical instead of elliptical diamond shaped. Both of those factors negatively affect sound reproduction (a spherical needle just doesn’t run through the record grooves as faithfully as an elliptical diamond needle, and sound quality is dictated by where the stylus meets the groove).
-USB turntables don’t always come with cuing levers. This makes it more difficult to lower the arm onto the record without scratching the record’s surface.
-I haven’t seen any USB turntables with an anti-skate function. Anti-skate is important to help keep the tone arm and needle playing in the center of the record groove while playing your records.
-Some USB turntables don’t even have a counterweight for the tone arm. A counterweight enables you to adjust the amount of pressure being applied from the stylus onto the record.
-Standard USB turntables don’t come with a dust cover. That’s just asking for trouble.
Why DAK's Interface Mixer is necessary for your LP and cassette conversion project:
DAK's Interface Mixer, the DAK 2800-PC, boosts the phono signal coming out of your turntable using the RIAA equalization curve. It's the intermediary between your turntable and your computer's line input, and ensures that all the impedance levels are matched up correctly. This prevents ground loop issues, notably 60hz hum, from ever occuring.
It feeds a 1.5V 600ohms signal to your computer's soundcard, and boasts a 20-20,000 hz frequency response with a -80db signal to noise ratio.
The 2 channels with independent volume controls enable you to keep both a turntable and a cassette deck connected for your digitization project. You won't need to fuss with plugging and unplugging each time you switch. It also has a microphone input for voiceover work.
What sets Audio Workshop apart from the pack:
It all starts with a strong sense of organization. Three program tabs intuitively divide the LP, 45 and cassette to MP3 processes into key stages, making your job that much simpler.
This list of all your markers is revolutionary in helping you manage all of your track splits. I haven't seen any other program that is this comprehensive and easy to use.
Tag multiple song files with Artist, Album, Track Number and more when saving your tracks. You only need to type it once for all the tracks being saved (generally the entire side of the record or tape). Saving the track number will keep your songs arranged in album order instead of alphabetically.
The included Internet Recorder (aka. Forbidden Song Grabber) is an excellent no-frills way to record any sound coming through your computer.
